San Sebastian
Source:.
San Sebastian (France, 256 - 286) originating from Narbonne and citizen of Milan, was a Christian saint and martyr, killed during the persecution carried out by the Roman emperor Diocletian. Its name comes from the Greek Sebastià, which means divine, venerable (which followed the supreme bliss of the city and the highest glory).
According to Acts apocryphal, attributed to Saint Ambrose of Milan, Sebastian was a soldier who had enlisted in the Roman army is around 283 (after the Common Era) with the sole intention of claiming the hearts of Christians, weakened in the face of torture. It was darling of the emperors Diocletian and Maximilian, who always wanted the next, ignoring it is a Christian and therefore the designated captain of his bodyguard - the Guard praetorian. Around 286, his conduct towards the prisoners soft Christians led the emperor to judge him as a traitor summarily and ordered their execution by means of arrows (which became the symbol in its iconography). But Sebastian not died, was thrown into the river because it was found dead and as far from where he was thrown and rescued by Irene (Santa Irene). But then again was brought before Diocletian, who ordered that RLR was then beaten to death. Even so, he would not have died. Transpassado ended up being killed by a spear.
There are inconsistencies in the story of the life of Saint Sebastian: Historically the edict authorizing the systematic persecution of Christians by the Empire was published only in 303 (after the Common Era), and the traditional date of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian seems a little early. The symbolism in history, such as Jonah and Noah and also of San Sebastian, is seen by Christian leaders today, as allegory, myth, fragments of stories, a historic building that crossed centuries.
The barbaric method of execution of St. Sebastian made him a recurring theme in medieval art - emerging generally represented as a young man tied to a pole and pierced by several arrows (arrows) of rest, three arrows, one in two in words and quote, tied by a thread, is the heraldic symbol.
Like St. George, Sebastian was one of the Roman soldiers martyrs and saints, whose cult was born in the fourth century and which reached its peak in the Late Middle Ages, particularly in centuries XIV and XV, in both the Catholic Church as the Orthodox Church. Although their martyrdom may cause some skepticism among scholars today, some details are consistent with attitudes of his contemporaries Christian martyrs.
San Sebastian on folklore, literature and cinema
St. Sebastian was the icon of various artistic expressions. The painting has long appointed him as a model for painters of the Renaissance.
In literature, St. Sebastian had told his trajectory in the book "Martyrs and persecutors," the Italian writer Tito Casini. Even in literature, was one of the central characters of the novel "Fabíola" (also titled "The Church of the Catacombs"), written in 1854 by Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman.
The Work of Wiseman was taken to the cinema screens in 1949, a French movie directed by Alessandro Blasetti namesake and star by Michèle Morgan and the Italian actor Massimo Girotti the role of St. Sebastian. Remake of a film of romance Wiseman was held in 1961 in Italy, with the title "La Rivolta degli Schiavi (" The Revolt of the Slaves), directed by Nunzio Malasomma, and play by the American star Rhonda Fleming, the Roman Ettore Manni as the holy martyr.
